Oopsy-Daisy: Failure Stories in Visualization Evaluation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Designing, conducting, and interpreting evaluation studies with human participants is challenging. While researchers in cognitive psychology, social science, and human-computer interaction view competence in evaluation study methodology a key job skill, it is only recently that visualization researchers have begun to feel the need to learn this skill as well. Acquiring such competence is a lengthy and difficult process fraught with much trial and error. Recent work on patterns for visualization evaluation is now providing muchneeded best practices for how to evaluate a visualization technique with human participants. However, negative examples of evaluation methods that fail, yield no usable results, or simply do not work are still missing, mainly because of the difficulty and lack of incentive for publishing negative results or failed research. In this paper, we take the position that there are many good ideas with the best intentions for how to evaluate a visualization tool that simply do not work. We call upon the community to help collect these negative examples in order to show the other side of the coin: what not to do when trying to evaluate visualization.

The Role of Visualization in EFL Learners’ Reading Comprehension and Recall of Short Stories
Generally speaking, lexical items that enter our minds through reading a text commonly leave us with pictures, sounds, echoes, and feelings in the mind. While the ability to produce images in the mind in the process of reading appears to be vital for greater comprehension and recall of texts, research has indicated that many poor readers seemingly do not visualize as they read. On the contrary,...
متن کاملDaisy Visualization for Graphs
Since graphs are ubiquitous representations of data that are used in many applications, creating graph layouts is an important problem. These graph layouts are usefully discussed in terms of aesthetics that originated from mathematical concepts. In contrast, we explore the use of alternative aesthetics to inspire the visualization of graphs. We present Daisy Visualization, for which we have des...

Computational storytelling systems have mainly focused on the construction and evaluation of textual discourse for communicating stories. Few intelligent camera systems have been built in 3D environments for effective visual communication of stories. The evaluation of effectiveness of these systems, if any, has focused mainly on the run-time performance of the camera placement algorithms. The p...
متن کاملVisJockey: Enriching Data Stories through Orchestrated Interactive Visualization
Visualization has recently begun to extend its role into a communication medium for presentation and storytelling. With the advancement in web-based visualization technology (e.g., D3), we increasingly encounter an integration of interactive visualizations into data stories in news media, blog posts, etc. However, these stories usually do not provide enough guidance on how to interpret and mani...
متن کاملFinding stories in the archive through paragraph alignment
We present research showing the possibility of finding stories in a digital text archive through computational methods. Referring to the concept of "archival bond", we define stories as formed by documents that relate to a target activity. We developed a method called paragraph alignment to find such documents and an interactive visualization to discover connected stories in context with proven...
